Here at South Yarra Ballet Academy, we believe that exceptional ballet training should never come at the cost of a child’s physical health or mental well-being. We actively reject the “overtraining” culture that often leads to burnout and injury in young athletes. Instead, our Vaganova-based training curriculum—complemented by the elite Ballet Conservatoire Syllabus—is structured to build physical strength, correct body alignment, and artistic precision gradually and safely.

How We Balance Health with Artistic Excellence:

  • Intelligent, Age-Appropriate Training: We restrict class sizes (8-12p) to ensure every dancer receives individual, highly attentive technical adjustments. This careful instruction prevents improper technique from turning into chronic physical strain.
  • Challenging but Inspiring Environment: We believe high standards and a nurturing environment can coexist. Our classes are designed to push boundaries, and ignite a deep passion for dance, and without implementing unnecessary psychological pressure.
  • Holistic Physical Conditioning: Alongside classical ballet, our Stretch & Conditioning programs focus on building the foundational strength and flexibility, necessary for a growing dancer. This rounds out their training safely, equipping young bodies to adapt high industry demands.

Your child’s happiness, health, and mental well-being form the foundation of our programs. Whether your dancer is studying on a dedicated vocational path or enjoying passionate recreational training, we guide them to achieve their personal best.

Age-appropriate training per Level

As recommended by leading dance health professionals, such as the Dance Clinic Wollongong, Physiotherapy, the hours of dance training per week should never outweigh the age number of the child (eg. 7yo student = maximum 7hrs weekly dance training*), as to prevent injury and over training. *This does not include other sports and cross-training, which are of benefit to a healthy dancer.

Recommended Programs

For aspiring young dancers, we recommend that students engage in a minimum of 2-3 days of training per week. Without this, students will fall behind the standard and developmental expectations of other pre-professional young dancers.

However, every dancer is unique.

To support the unique goals of the dancers that visit our studios, we have three pathways:
